The phonetics of primary vs . secondary stress in English
نویسنده
چکیده
This study investigates the acoustic correlates of the distinction between primary and secondary stress in English. It is shown that pitch, intensity, and jitter contribute significantly to that distinction, while durational cues are weak. Left-prominent words are characterized by the acoustic prominence of the primarily stressed syllable (higher pitch, greater intensity, low jitter). In contrast, phonologically right-prominent words are acoustically characterized by more or less level pitch and intensity. These results can be interpreted as evidence for a word-internal declination effect.

Acoustic correlates of primary and secondary stress in North American English
This study investigates the acoustic correlates of the distinction between primary and secondary stress in English in accented and unaccented morphologically complex words that are either left-prominent or right-prominent (e.g. "violate vs. vio"lation). In both accented and unaccented words, the position of primary and secondary stress significantly influences F0, intensity, and spectral bala...

This study investigates effects of three prosodic factors—prosodic boundary (Utterance-initial vs. Utterance-medial), lexical stress (primary vs. secondary) and phrasal accent (accented vs. unaccented)—on articulatory and acoustic realizations of word-initial CVs (/nε/, /tε/) in trisyllabic English words. Articulatory measurements include linguopalatal contact (by electropalatography) for both ...

Three male American English talkers spoke words that differed in lexical stress, and sentences that differed in phrasal stress, while video and movements of the face were recorded. In a production study, stressed vs. unstressed syllables from these utterances were compared along many measures of facial movement, which were generally larger and faster. In a visual perception study, 16 perceivers...
